Search "best online social media marketing degree" and you will find a dozen ranked lists. Nearly all of them are built by sites paid a commission when you request information from a school, and none of them will tell you the first thing we found.
There is no such thing as a social media marketing degree in the federal data. We queried every program in the U.S. Department of Education's field-of-study dataset. Not one is classified as social media marketing. It is not a recognised field of study.
What you are actually being sold is one of three quite different degrees with a concentration bolted on. And the difference between them is worth more than the difference between any two schools on this page.
What you are actually choosing between
| Field (federal CIP) | Programs | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing (5214) | 526 | $59,736 | $66,469 | $74,167 |
| Communication, Other (0999) | 22 | $50,319 | $59,122 | $66,868 |
| Specialized Sales & Marketing (5219) | 42 | $50,220 | $56,019 | $62,104 |
| Journalism (0904) | 189 | $49,450 | $54,396 | $59,764 |
| Communication & Media Studies (0901) | 661 | $48,264 | $54,195 | $60,184 |
| Radio/TV & Digital Communication (0907) | 163 | $43,954 | $49,359 | $57,956 |
| Graphic & Digital Design (1003) | 60 | $35,195 | $43,401 | $52,249 |
A program marketed as "social media marketing" can sit in any of these. The spread between the top and bottom rows is $23,068 a year — for degrees that look nearly identical in a brochure.
The finding that should decide your choice
Field-level medians can be dismissed as a school-quality artifact: maybe marketing degrees just cluster at better institutions. So we controlled for that directly.
We isolated every institution that offers both an online marketing bachelor's and an online communications bachelor's — same school, same delivery mode, same admissions standards, same student population — and compared them head to head.
| Institution | Marketing | Communications | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Memphis | $67,468 | $42,605 | +$24,863 |
| Walsh University | $68,678 | $46,374 | +$22,304 |
| University of Minnesota-Crookston | $63,579 | $45,916 | +$17,663 |
| University of Cincinnati-Main Campus | $72,881 | $56,818 | +$16,063 |
| Abilene Christian University | $65,244 | $49,202 | +$16,042 |
| University of Phoenix-Arizona | $72,745 | $57,523 | +$15,222 |

| Colorado State University Global | $71,199 | $62,743 | +$8,456 |
| Bellevue University | $68,500 | $61,294 | +$7,206 |
| Grand Canyon University | $60,303 | $54,622 | +$5,681 |
| University of Arizona Global Campus | $66,307 | $61,909 | +$4,398 |
| University of Maryland Global Campus | $60,811 | $67,181 | −$6,370 |
Marketing paid more at 15 of 16 schools, with a median gap of $14,050 a year.
That is the single most actionable number in this article. Before you compare schools, ask the admissions office one question: which college grants this degree — the business school or the communications school? At the University of Memphis that question is worth $24,863 annually. Only one institution in our data, UMGC, ran the other way.

If communications is genuinely the better fit for you, the strongest online programs are University of New Hampshire College of Professional Studies ($69,098), University of Maryland Global Campus ($67,181), Colorado State University Global ($62,743), and University of Arizona Global Campus ($61,909).
How to read this table honestly. These are outcomes, not causation. Several of the highest entries are degree-completion programs serving mid-career students who were already earning well before they enrolled — the degree did not create that salary. Wisconsin's $96,148 reflects a selective institution with a student body that would earn above average anywhere. Use the table to shortlist and to sanity-check price, not as proof that a school will produce that result for you.
Online costs you less than the internet claims
| Field | Online median | Campus median | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communication & Media Studies | $54,622 | $54,184 | +$438 |
| Journalism | $54,015 | $54,396 | −$381 |
| Marketing | $63,524 | $66,916 | −$3,392 (−5.1%) |
| Specialized Sales & Marketing | $52,596 | $56,702 | −$4,106 |
Online communications graduates earn marginally more than campus graduates. Online marketing carries a 5.1% penalty — real, but a fraction of the $14,050 you gain by choosing the business school over the communications school in the first place.
The ordering matters: pick the field first, the delivery mode second, the school third. Most ranking sites invert that entirely, because school choice is the only one of the three they can be paid to influence.
The advice that costs us nothing to give
For a meaningful number of people reading this, the honest answer is that you should not buy this degree at all.
If your goal is to run social media accounts competently, the platforms themselves certify you. Meta Blueprint, Google Analytics and Google Ads certifications, and HubSpot Academy cost between nothing and a few hundred dollars, take weeks rather than years, and are re-issued as the platforms change — which they do constantly. A 2027 degree curriculum will be teaching platform mechanics that are partly obsolete by graduation. A portfolio of accounts you have actually grown will out-perform a diploma in nearly every hiring conversation in this specific field.
A degree is worth the money when:
- You want the general business foundation — pricing, unit economics, budgeting — that certifications never cover
- You need a bachelor's for HR screening, promotion eligibility, immigration, or graduate school
- You intend to move into management rather than remain in execution
- Your employer is paying for it
A degree is a poor investment when you are buying it purely to learn platform tactics, or when the total cost is not serviceable against a $63,524 median. That is the number to underwrite against — not the $96,148 at the top of the table.
How to choose, in order
- Confirm the CIP code and the granting college. Business school marketing degree, not communications. Ask directly; the brochure will not tell you.
- Check institutional accreditation. Recognised regional accreditation governs federal aid, credit transfer, and employer recognition. Everything else is secondary.
- Price it against $63,524, not against the top of any ranking.
- Confirm transfer articulation in writing if you are starting at an associate level. Non-transferring credits are the most expensive routine mistake in online education.
- Start the certifications now, whatever you decide about the degree. They are cheap, immediate, and stack with anything.
What we earn from this
Nothing. We hold no affiliate relationships with any school or lead-generation network, accept no payment from institutions we cover, and no school saw this analysis before publication. We publish it because the arithmetic was already done and the existing rankings are advertising wearing a lab coat.
Our full methodology, exclusions, and correction policy are documented separately. If you think a figure here is wrong, tell us and we will check it against the federal source and correct it publicly.
